Parrish Smith fully indulges his taste for sleazy and romantic ‘90s grunge, metal, trip-hop and alt.club styles to the hilt on a strong debut album Buckling the timeline of styles to a personalised, uchronic agenda, Parrish Smith builds on the hard-bit reputation of his early 12”s with a classy collapse of late ‘90s into early ’20s aesthetics on ‘Light, Cruel & Vain’. Following the themes of his ‘Sex Suicide & Speed Metal’ (2018) EP for Dekmantel, he returns to the label with his most significant body of work; a strapping, 11-track set that resonates a certain zeitgeist for rock/grunge/metal that’s resulted some pretty dodgy gear in recent times, but Parrish does so with a far less cringey and more authentic thrust that hits home for anyone who cut their teeth thrashing around in rock clubs and who preferred scuzzier, weirdly wired venues over the mainstream. If Silent Servant had come of age in the late ‘90s, his music may well sound like ‘Light, Cruel & Vain’. The pall of ‘80s goth and muscle of EBM is still there, but complicated by a lust induced by new synthetic drugs and textures and splintering subgenres. Tracks reel from the autotuned grunge of ‘Fader’ thru big beaty trip hop that wouldn’t sound of place in the original Matrix or Fight Club scores on ‘Black Scarlet’ and ’Never Break Faith’, with the likes of its sleazy title tune and swaggering ‘Crush The Muse’ recalling an AI reminiscence of NIN and Depeche Mode. Our personal faves are the fantasy sequence of ‘IAMNOTTHERE’ and ruthless razz of ‘I Wanna Be An Idol’, but they’re all best taken in the album’s tangled flow of uprooted nostalgia and stylishly finessed aesthetics.
