It must be a couple of years since we last had a studio album from Mia Dyson, but she is back in all her glory here. Co-produced by her long-time collaborator Erin Sydney, so the skills of Alabama Shakes’ Ben Tanner were also taken avail of, and this was recorded in Muscle Shoals.
There is a stripped back feel to the sound, even on occasion a lo-fi feel, which works really well as Mia gives us what must be her most intimate and thoughtful album to date. The tracks varying between fuller on pieces, with quieter introspective pieces make this mixed and not sounding the same throughout. Definitely she has opened up a bit here, with a slightly more relaxed and commanding sound, and I know that she has said that working with others on this has made her more aware of taking yourself as you are, rather than being pushed by others. This has meant that there is a confidence and assuredness here, giving tracks slightly more power in their delivery.
In all this is something that will probably go down well, certainly with her fans, but also with newer listeners to her music. Admittedly this will not be for everyone, but there is a certain elegance in listening to this, and a more mature sound than Mia has given us before.
