Each Let's Eat Grandma record is a totally surreal musical journey. We discovered the London duo in 2016 with a falsely magical first album called I, Gemini (reviewed here) before doing it again with a second more metallic and experimental album produced by the expert hands of the late SOPHIE who was I'm All Ears (reviewed here). Let's find out what they are going to offer us with their successor, which is called Two Ribbons.
As expected, Let's Eat Grandma changes tack again. Written separately for the first time, Two Ribbons will explore the theme of mourning and death on more synthetic and exuberant compositions than ever with, among others, "Happy New Year" which opens the ball but also "Levitation" and "Hall Of Mirrors” making us both ooze and dance with its heady synthetic layers.
Little by little, Let's Eat Grandma intoxicates us all the time. Whether on "Insect Loop" and "Half Light", we can gradually feel an evolution in the music of the British duo, gradually leaving the dancefloor allure to go towards something more contemplative and melancholy. As proof of this, the sublime ballads “Sunday” and “Strange Conversations” reveal themselves with an open heart on these themes that challenge them each time before touching us with an ethereal conclusion.
What is certain is that Let's Eat Grandma is not one to repeat itself and this Two Ribbons will be no exception. But it is by combining the ambitions of the first album with the depth of the second while renewing their sound that the two protagonists will manage to impress us a third time even if the impact will be a bit less compared to their previous works. Not to be missed.
