Spangled confections of fizzy and driving percussion, multilingual vox and pitch bent electronics with an artful, Euro slant - new on TTT ’24 96’ racks up the first batch of mutant audities from the studio of Ciccio, aka Francesco Pastacaldi (drums), and Olivier Demeaux (machines) aka 2mo. Accompanied by instrumental and vocal input by friends, they explore the cracks between classic French psych and industrial, a la Vox Populi or Geins’t Naït, and its contemporary descendents as found on the likes of Low Jack’s Editions Gravats (BZMC, Èlg, Maoupa Mazzochetti) with a smart balance of rhythmic tension and warm, warped electronics puckered with French and Italian vocals. There are club-worthy trax inside, but ’24 96’ is better considered as an album in its own right, tilting between subtly urgent groovers and more sultry styles set for smoky salons and lowlit bar times rather than raving. They snag us in a sort of slow/fast gradient with the tentative then pacy slosh of opener ‘Chiara Obscura’, and reel off like a zonked $hit & $hine in the cranky stepper ‘Tunnel’, with the slower intensity of ‘Via Boccaccio’ working adjunct Toresch or Tolouse Low Trax. Their weirdo slow thrummer ‘Abdel’ feels like music for a darkroom in a Hammer horror, and matters only get more lysergic with the polytemporal lather of ‘Otarie’ and the spangled freeness of ’Sea Weeds Jazz Club’.
