On the title track to her debut ep one to ten, Scout Gillett's signature velvet voice sails from a murmur to a belt: “You only got one life / to live, to live, to live” she urges. It’s a fitting credo that Gillett is clearly exemplifying: an indie spark plug with old soul sensibilities, she crafts soulful, folk-tinged music that draws on both her rural roots and her DIY spirit.
Since relocating from Kansas City in 2017, Scout has become a fixture in Brooklyn’s music scene, playing in multiple live bands and even starting her own booking company to organize local shows. Her intrepid nature was borne of necessity; the product of a childhood spent running barefoot through rural Missouri and a coming of age in Kansas City’s punk scene.
Featuring one original track and four covers, one to ten showcases both her inimitable sound and her impeccable taste. The timeless quality of her music allows her takes on Broadcast and Brenda Lee to sit comfortably alongside one another, a seamless collection of electric guitar, pedal steel, harmonica, and more. These expert arrangements provide a vintage-hued frame for the original track (“one to ten”), and the resulting EP offers a lush taste of more to come from Scout Gillett.
