Blending infectious Texan pop with Merseybeat and just a dose of cajun, quintessential Texas band Sir Douglas Quintet carved a notch in the garage rock canon in the 1960s. The name was meant to suggest Anglo credentials in the midst of the British Invasion; however, Sahm’s southern accent swiftly belied any such attempt at deception. They scored an international hit in 1965 with "She’s About A Mover" off the audaciously - and a bit prematurely - titled THE BEST OF SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET. Following a drug arrest in '66, a move to the more mellow San Francisco, and a three-year-hiatus, the band released the outstanding MENDOCINO; the propulsive title track returned the band to the top 40. Sahm would resurface in the Lone Star State supergroup, the Texas Tornadoes, in the '90s.
