The Courettes - Back In Mono (2021)

It took two albums for The Courettes to impress us. The Danish duo of Flavia and Martin have made a name for themselves with their deceptively anachronistic sixties-tinged garage-pop that will have easily impressed more than one person. And they repeat in the material with their third disc named Back In Mono.

With these fourteen titles, The Courettes fully assumes the mono sounds that give this wriggling vintage feeling. Halfway between The Kinks and The Sonics, the Danish duo plays the 1960s card to the fullest with tailor-made anthems such as “Want You! Like A Cigarette” which opens the ball but also “Hey Boy” and “Night Time (The Boy Of Mine)” which fascinate us with so much efficiency.

The Courettes intoxicates and bewitches us with this old-school and mono touch that never fails. The Danish duo offers a good summary with “R.I.N.G.O. “, “Trash Can Honey” and “Hop The Twig” which are placed under the nostalgia before repeating towards more haunting moments on the B side. This is particularly the case for “Misfits and Freaks” or even for “My One and Only Baby" and "Too Late To Say I'm Sorry" where the duo shows their sentimental side without overdoing it before getting back on a good footing with "Won't Let You Go" and "Cry Cry Cry" in as a closure. Like what, mono is good.
