Aphantasia robs those afflicted of the ability to create mental imagery and associations, literally translated it means without imagination.
Noveller paints intense miniature memories through sound.
In the past, Sarah Lipstate has often created albums that, while instrumental, told vivid stories that stretched across multiple tracks. Following the release of Arrow, she had a year planned with touring and promotion, both as a member of Iggy Pop’s band and as a solo artist. We all know what happened to those plans. Suddenly surprised to be at home indefinitely, she set about moving to a new creative space in Los Angeles, setting up a studio, and challenging herself daily. Those explorations of sound and technology inevitably led to new songs. Only this time, the songs were self-contained. A short sharp flash. If her usual process brought about cinematic results, these were something new - something swift and intriguing.
If Arrow was a gripping novel, Aphantasia is a collection of divergent poems.
The 22 songs dart about. Some bubbling with curiosity, while others are thick with tension. Each one unique - a sudden visual that disappears before you can wrap your arms around it.
