Heading an excellent group, Roscoe Mitchell does not, however, move into any new direction with this otherwise commendable effort. The recording resembles more a career summation, which makes it a perfect primer for anyone interested in exploring his vast and diversified output. He is supported by three musicians who are well acquainted with his musical vision -- drummer Tani Tabbal, bassist Jaribu Shahid, and the excellent pianist Craig Taborn -- as well as a promising newcomer, trumpeter Corey Wilkes, who has also joined Mitchell with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This is a remarkably focused and concise date featuring Mitchell's brand of atonal jazz mixed with his interests in other musical forms. "Quintet Nine" is a Latin dance embellished by his shrill flute; "Rhine Ridge" is a foot-tapping funky theme; "In Six" flirts with classical chamber music and includes graceful and airy flute playing; and the cacophonous "Take One" is a fine platform for his trademark circular breathing prowess. The young Wilkes displays much maturity -- he never rushes and takes his time to develop well-articulated ideas. Taborn delivers yet another performance worth of notice, delivering some choppy but crystalline lines. With a support of such quality, Mitchell can look toward the future with confidence
