Mr. Mercurial, the new long-player from singer/songwriter/guitarist Kyle Frederick, marks the Americana artist’s fifth successful outing with co-producer Byron House. The album’s thirteen tracks reveal that, like many of us, Mr. Frederick has spent the pandemic years sorting out the past, dealing with the confusion of the present, and wondering what the future holds. He finds comfort in the things that truly matter, and gets a little help from gospel star Odessa Settles along the way.

As with 2020’s Burn Your Poor Mouth Down, Frederick’s impressive acoustic guitar skills form a rock-solid musical foundation for a wide range of material. From rollicking tracks like “Old Lovers Lane,” “Joe Sam Queen,” and “The Tilda,” to the propulsive folk of “The Firefighter” and “I Was There,” to the glimmering ballads “Wine Smile” and “Goodbye Addison,” the record constantly reminds the listener just how powerful and versatile a six-string acoustic can be in the hands of an extraordinary player.

“We seasoned this album throughout with loads of musical fun,” explains House, who played keyboards and sitar in addition to co-producing. House’s son, Truman, handled percussion and Heidi Gluck returned to contribute backing vocals to two songs. Rarely has a record with so brief a list of players offered arrangements so subtle, catchy, and clever. “Whether the flavor is spoken, sung or masterfully played on acoustic guitar, every new visit delivers a fresh, compelling, and thought-provoking listen,” House says.

The lyrics are on par with the quality of the music. Mr. Mercurial opens with a farewell to a longtime friend and ends with a song to a friend the singer never got the chance to tell goodbye. The eleven tracks between wrestle with failed relationships, societal struggles, and the little victories that keep us going on our toughest days. There’s the frivolity of celebrating a crush on actress Tilda Swinton by attempting to create a dance craze in her honor, the story of a love so
painful that even your dreams have banished your ex, and a tribute to hard-partying music-biz mentors of yore.

“Mr. Mercurial is packed with some of my favorite lyrical content,” House says. “Weeping A Trend,” which Frederick co-wrote with his old friend Kevin Lovelace, and “I Was There” take Frederick’s lyrics to new heights, wrestling with the role of personal responsibility within institutional failures. Frederick’s “Write On,” a tribute to authors and the power of the written word, was strong enough to land a special vocal appearance by Nashville activist and gospel star Odessa Settles, whose performance lifts the recording to anthemic levels.

“It honors not just those individuals recognized in the top echelon, rather, ‘everyone’ of us, including blue-collar workers, world leaders, and those who have given their lives or suffered because of their personal beliefs,” Settles says. “The backstory is that not everyone is treated as if we were created equal; however, everyone has a story.”

“Kyle lets us know that although we’re surrounded by so many challenges, we must continue to “Write On,” because it’s our collective stories that help make the changes needed to create a better place,” Settles continues, “a better environment, and ultimately, a better individual. Write on, Kyle!
