Mulatu Astatke - Timeless (2022)

Of Ethiopian origin, Mulatu Astatke is a giant of African music. He is the inventor of Ethio-Jazz. His work has inspired many imitations but never equaled, and especially entire generations of fans of all ages. His music navigates between sublime Tezetas (typical songs in Ethiopia and Eritrea) to the most groovy of Funks. The “Ethiopic” compilations brought to light a fascinating scene that existed in Addis Ababa in the 60s, Their composer/arranger at that time was MULATU ASTATKE! On February 1, a most exceptional Mulatu concert took place at the Luckmann Theatre, sold out that day. He shared the stage with veterans of the Los Angeles Jazz Scene: Benie Maupin, Aza Lawrence and Phil Ranelin to name but a few. The intensity of this concert was unanimous and will go down in history. With as many Ethiopian classics as new pieces, this performance is a true tribute to this unique and rich culture that is Ethio Jazz. Nas, Damien Marley, Cut Chemist, Quantic, Madlib and K'naan have all been influenced by Ethio Jazz. This CD pays tribute to Mulatu and his music!
