Essence of Duality traverses the boundaries of jazz and classical Indian music, building aesthetic connections between the two. The album is the inevitable result of Hindol’s migration to Germany in search of new sounds and compositional styles. It was a challenge for him to overcome the cultural and musical differences, breaking his inner boundaries, until finally the two perspectives merged.
Sitarist and composer Hindol Deb started learning the Sitar at the age of five from his father Sri Panchanan Sardar. He also received training from other imminent teachers like Pandit Santosh Bannerji and was later groomed under the tutelage of Pandit Deepak Chowdhury.
As one of the Indian music critics wrote in his column,”Hindol’s performance is marked by a combination of technical finesse and a deep sense of maturity.” His indian classical renditions are marked by maintaining purity of the Raga, aesthetically woven Improvisation with elaborate rhythmic sections. He has toured internationally various countries including US, Germany, France, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, Japan, Denmark.
With his base in Indian classical Hindol has been actively involved in combining different other genres exploring the infinite combinations in the crossover of Indian music with various other genres like Contemporary Western Classical, Jazz, Flamenco, Nordic folk, Balkan music. In 2015 he did a Crossover Project together with german double Bassist Sebastian Gramss called Roots & Shoots touring India and Germany. He also worked with the well-known Swedish Duo Mattias and Nina Perez along with Suchet Malhotra on their Nordic-Indian Crossover Northlight to give performances in Sweden and India. In 2018 he recorded for Marcus Stockhausen together with other musicians in Eternal Voyage, released by SONY music. In 2019 he worked with Marina Abramovic in her Project ‘Anders Hören’. Apart from that Hindol has been involved in several other projects and improvised Neue music performances. His music for a Dance Choreography in 2015 in India called Crossing Oceans has been staged in all major dance festivals.
Hindol’s deep interest in learning and composing for western instruments led him to finish Masters in Jazz Improvisation from the Hochschule für Musik, Köln. During his study in the University his interest was drawn towards the medieval western music as well as Jazz. As a result of that he created two of his own projects – Medieval Raga, with Indian & Medieval music composed for Sitar, Cello and Percussion; the other is a Crossover-jazz Quartet ‘Metamorphosis composed for Sitar, Piano, Double Bass and Drums. Current he is working on both his projects to give concerts and eventually produce them.
Hindol was invited for a music exchange program by the Carnegie Hall to work together with their Alumni Musicians. He was also invited by the French ministry of Culture for a Residency at the Recollets, by Rikskonzerter Sweden to participate in Ethno and by Goethe Institute Germany to work on his Compositions.
As a dedicated teacher Hindol conducts Sitar lessons and workshops of Indian Classical music, Improvisation, interpretation of Indian music in Western musical context. Among some of the Institutes he has conducted workshops in Hoschule for Muzik und Tanz in Cologne, Popakademie Mannheim, Rheinische Music Schule Cologne, Arvika, Karlstad and Lund University in Sweden to name a few. Since 2017 Hindol teaches Indian Music at the Popakademie in Mannheim.
