Tekla Peterson - Heart Press (2022)

Tekla Peterson - Heart Press (2022)

BAND/ARTIST: Tekla Peterson

Spires That In The Sunset Rise and Dire Wolves' Taralie Peterson adopts a new moniker to flex her avant-pop muscle on "Heart Press". Peterson's output has been varied to say the least. An accomplished sax player, she also plays cello, as we heard on 2020's Geographic North-released Louise Bock album "Sketch for Winter VII - Abyss: For Cello". On "Heart Press", the neo classical experiments have been checked at the door, and Peterson's influences are more radio-centric, touching on Japanese city pop and Blondie-era post-punk. Opening track 'Soda Pop Jam' is a singalong marvel, with Peterson moaning "bet you didn't cry" while squashed drums cycle alongside tropical synths and wonky bass. Peterson morphs into Kate Bush-via-Kraftwerk territory on 'Swarm of Gnats', managing to remind of the early 1980s without fully leaning into its production excesses, while on 'Between a Rock' she slows things down considerably, harmonizing with FM choirs. The most successful track is 'WWIB', a lengthy distorto-house jam that Peterson sounds matched perfectly with. "Take me from this beautiful garden of pain," she squeals over a pumping 4/4 beat and Jean-Michele Jarre synths.
