A late-bloomer musically, Bryan didn't pick up the electric bass until 1997, adding fretless electric to his arsenal just a year or so after that, and then started playing upright bass in 2000. A childhood friend's dad was a bass player and always had basses around when they would spend time hanging out, and eventually gave Bryan his first bass lessons.
Though he grew up in the foothills of Western North Carolina, with MerleFest and the sounds of bluegrass and Americana practically in his backyard, his real musical influences were actually far removed from that cultural and musical fabric. An early love of Jazz/Rock and other styles (Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Steely Dan) helped forge a love of music that would lay the groundwork for later musical pursuits.
Studies at UNC-Asheville led to a degree in Music/Jazz Studies and Multimedia Arts, where studio recording time helped foster his interest in and love for knowing how to help produce and secure the best bass sound possible in studio sessions. It also helped lay the groundwork for a host of networking opportunities that have paid big dividends to this day.
Now firmly established as a part of the Asheville and Western NC music scene and bass community, Bryan has put to good use all of the diverse musical influences he absorbed early on.
His eclectic tastes and talents have brought him in contact with musicians and styles from both coasts, ranging from West Coast Jazz/Fusion and AOR to Folk/Country/Bluegrass and NYC Jazz here on the East Coast. No stranger to rock n' roll, Bryan has even played in a few straight-ahead/alternative rock bands in his day as well. In such an eclectic, burgeoning music scene, diversity is the key to being successful and in-demand.
For 2020 Bryan's projects include the March release of Up Jumped Three's latest self-titled record, and the October release of 'sketchbook 2020', a collection of pieces compiled from various home recording sessions and improvisations during the COVID crisis.
