Austrian composer Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek is mostly remembered for his overture to the opera Donna Diana, but the rest of his creative output is rarely recorded or performed.
CPO has started a project to record all of Reznicek’s orchestral works and their journey continues with the ‘Tragic’ First Symphony which was lost for ninety years and only resurfaced during the 1980s. The symphony is intended as absolute music, using a single idea and repeating it in various forms. It does not have a programme as such and merely uses ‘tragic’ as a title.
