The Academy of Ancient Music [on period instruments]
Christopher Hogwood - conductor

This is volume II of the first "original instruments" performance of Mozart's complete symphonic works, as originally issued in seven individual box sets totaling 19 CD's, a historical achievement and groundbreaking performances at a very high level. In total, these performances are the first complete collection of Mozart's symphonies to be recorded on period instruments and using original performance practices.

The Academy of Ancient Music was founded by Christopher Hogwood in 1973. At that time, the HIP movement (Historically-Informed Performance) was in its infancy, and "period" or "authentic" performances were just beginning to become mainstream. Hogwood, the Concert Master Jaap Schroder, and the AAM were leaders of that movement, and embarked upon their objective of turning the clock back and making the best effort possible to understand the original intention of the classical composers, and perform their works in the same style that it was originally performed. This required changes to the instruments used (such as strings made of animal gut and not steel, trumpets without valves), size of the orchestra, pitch, and had a significant effect on the classical music world. The AAM was initially a baroque orchestra, then beginning in 1978 the classical orchestra of the AAM was created, in order to perform the repertoire of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and so forth.

The AAM was the first orchestra to record all of Mozart's symphonies using authentic practices. They began their project to record these works, to include not only the numbered symphonies 41, but also alternative versions of symphonies 31, 35 and 40, and 27 other symphonic works, in October, 1979, and continued until completion in August of 1985. The recordings were released beginning in late 1979.
