Phil Harrison met Stuart Gordon at Liverpool Art College after Gordon had relocated from Newcastle. They formed Sticky George, gigged around the country and played long stints at the Everyman Theatre. Sticky George were drawn into the Liverpool Scene and increasingly mixed poetry and theatre into their act. However, Stuart and Phil wanted to focus on writing and playing proper songs, so the two regrouped as The Shortwaveband. Offers from The Incredible String Band, Stackridge and even a Beatles musical production at the Everyman were rejected in favor of their own artistic vision.
Demos were recorded at Trident Studios and a contract with RCA was signed in the spring of 1974. The Shortwaveband album was mainly recorded during two short stints at Rockfield Studios. The structure of the album was shaped in real time as they worked round the clock to finish within limited budget constraints. The rollercoaster result throws you from rowdy opener Today's Rain to ballad Moons Bright, followed by high-octane jig Jagram. Edgy musical tension pervades throughout, peaking on marvellous closer Song Of I, a fragile pop elegy under siege from a stormy folk tune.
