The tone makes the music. It has always been that way and will always remain that way. Trombonist Janning Trumann, pianist Lucas Leidinger, bassist Florian Herzog and drummer Thomas Sauerborn have been playing together as Janning Trumann 4 for six years. Together they have made the good sound their business. Their sound attracts attention, because it is the result of a long and intensive dedication to the essentials.
Until now, the Janning Trumann 4 worked purely acoustically. On their new album "Roots & Riots" the sound of the quartet is now partially electrified by electric bass, synthesizer and some effects on the trombone. Accordingly, not only the sound spectrum of the group becomes more extensive, but also their range of expression. Each piece moves in a different direction.
The connecting moments of the pieces, for all their diversity, are a closeness and intimacy that one cannot escape. "Roots & Riots" is not an album to listen to on the side, it challenges the listener always and in every moment. From the vehemence of the flowing moment one can feel surrounded in the most positive sense of the word.
In times of powerlessness, decisions have to be made. On "Roots & Riots", the Janning Trumann 4 opts for more humanity at the expense of technical hyper-precision. Music that goes inside instead of evaporating on the surface in wonder, a sound that has to be heard because it wants to be heard.
