Salzburger Hofmusik - Martines: Symphony in C Major, Psalms 110 & 151 (2022)

If you listen to the three pieces on this CD, you can definitely agree without falling into enthusiasm. The two psalms benefit from a skillful set of instruments. Psalm 110 - as to be expected in the outer movements with drums and trumpets - and in two movements of Psalm 115 through the use of a so-called salterio, a dulcimer, which gives the overall sound a special charm. In any case, the compositions thrive on lively orchestral playing. The chorus, on the other hand, is a bit disappointing. Although the notes are not particularly difficult, he does not sing homogeneously enough for me. Individual voices are sometimes too present. The solo voices are o.k. Only mezzo Nele Gramss' voice is too restless, too "uncertain" for me. The extremely simple "little symphony" for strings (just 12 minutes long) in the middle of the Martines program doesn't exactly encourage my enthusiasm either. Recording and booklet quality, on the other hand, are impeccable. Conclusion: A thoroughly worthwhile acquaintance with a composer of the early classical period. Beautiful - but no more!
