With ORGELMUSIK DER ROMANTIK minster organist Friedemann Johannes Wieland presents a minster organ album which contains only romanticism organ music: French organ romanticism and two sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The connecting element between the pieces is their choral-like format stylistic device as Bass-cantus-firmus in Mendelsohn's A-major sonata, as developing ultimate principle in Franck's a-minor choral, as ending in „Piéce héroïque“, as the works opening in Boëllmann's „Suite gothique“ and in Lefébure-Wély's „Chœur“. In the final movement of Mendelsohn's c-minor sonata the fugue theme as well appears choral-like.
Another interesting thought is that the connection between Franck's „Choral a-Moll“ and Mendelssohn's „A-Dur-Sonate“ are both affiliated to the common ideal Johann Sebastian Bach: Mendelssohn's Bach worship is not only reflected in the usage of the fugue format, and Franck uses a reference to Bach's prelude BWV 543.
With these works on this album it is also the first demonstration of the Ulm Minster's regained gorgeous sound after the 2012 general tuning including the cleaning of its pedal towers. And last but not least the fact, that in today's Minster organ 75% of the precursor organ pipe material was used, which on the other hand entirely originates from the 1856 organ.
