Lacrimae Ensemble - Diego Ortiz: Flow My Tears (2016) [DSD64]

Famous melodies in their original form with virtuoso variations, improvisations on La Folia, ricercares from Diego Ortiz and Aurelio Virgiliano, variations on a theme from Christopher Simpson, and fantasies from Orlando Gibbons. These, combined with the buoyant music from Falconieri and the individualised music from Captain Tobias Hume, form a varied and coherent program.

This disc has an attractive program of music from the late Renaissance and Early Baroque. Each member of the ensemble has the opportunity for solo parts as well as playing duos or trios, and the group’s colourful instrumentation varies attractively throughout the programme. Tempi are well-judged, with infectious toe-tapping dances and brilliantly virtuosic runs.
Aliud’s sonics simulate the warmth, informality and intimacy of the drawing-rooms of musical connoisseurs, which is where most of these pieces would have been performed. Every tonal character of the instruments is captured to perfection.
This is pleasurable and enriching music which deserves a wide audience. Performance and Sonics: 5 Star Rating.
