Greek musician Dimitris Chiotis (composer /multi instrumentalist) collaborates with iranian, iraqi and greek musicians performing original compositions. “Alati” is a crossover album with melodies reminiscent of greek and middle eastern traditions mixed along with ethnic - jazz elements and dreamy landscapes of vocal improvisations.
The album’s title is “Alati”, the greek word for “salt”.
“Alati” is a collection of original compositions that reflect my twenty years long journey into music.
Over the years, I studied instruments such as the cretan lyra (greek fiddle), as well as instruments from other traditions, mainly from the Arab world and Iran. Always fascinated about other genres and traditions, apart from greek music, for many years I was the lyra player on a ethnic - jazz band.
On this album I was fortunate enough to have all the master musicians put together and all the possible combinations of different music instruments.Three musicians from Iran, one male singer form Iraq, two female singers and three musicians from Greece were the ideal performers I could ever dream about this material. During a break from the recording sessions I had an enlightening travel to Iran where apart from an extensive workshop I had, I was also introduced to the music community of Tehran which lead me to the santur (hammered dulcimer) player who is playing on the album.
In this work, the new sound and approaches I have developed come together with the knowledge I gained studying the traditions of the Middle East.
