For the German-born pianist Ulrike Fendel, long resident in Vienna, the starting point for the production of this CD was her interest in demonstrating the different means of expression and the stylistic diversity of the last 100 years using the genre of the prelude. The country-specific musical diction, often characterized by its roots in folk music, of 15 composers from eight different nations can be heard in the works of Harald Genzmer, Nino Rota, Alexander Tcherepnin or Alfredo Casella. Apart from other preludes by Dimitri Shostakovich, Astor Piazzolla and George Gershwin, this magnificent selection of compositions from a time marked by stylistic pluralism also contains very recent works by Alexander Kral, Wolfram Wagner and Meinhard Rüdenauer (world premieres in 2010).
