11. Ragtime
"'Laughter amidst tears' might be the motto for many movements of Rick LaSalle's piano sonatas, for emotive passages are quickly followed by solace." These are the words used by the Austrian pianist Ingrid Marsoner to describe the works on her new recording, Piano Sonatas No. 2 op. 59, No. 7 op. 75 (à la Monsieur R.) and No. 8 op. 76. The Flemish-Hessian Rick LaSalle - actually a musicologist and self-taught composer, although this fact does not seem worth mentioning after 76 already completed works (including five piano concertos, concertos and chamber music for wind instruments and five further piano sonatas) - is well-known for his successful 'pushing the limits' of styles. Elements of Neo-classicism, Baroque, Impressionism or Minimal Music are here fused naturally, disseminating 'a lot of joy and good humour'. This world premiere recording is completed with a ragtime dedicated to the performer.
