Sammartini Giuseppe - Sammartini: 6 Sonate a Oboe Solo con il Basso (2013)

Since its foundation, the eleven-year-old ensemble Concertino Amarilli, centring on the harpsichordist Ulli Nagy and the Baroque cellist Marie Orsini-Rosenberg and since 2005/06 enriched by the Italians Andrea Mion, oboe, and Stefano Roccco, lute, has chiefly devoted itself to Italian Baroque music. This CD presents for the first time the 6 Sonate a Oboè solo con il Basso by the Milan oboist and composer Giuseppe Sammartini, famous not least due to his more prominent younger brother Giovanni. The works are technically challenging and written especially for the instrument, and the interpretation is refreshing, entertaining and of the highest precision in articulation and expression. For this production, hitherto unpublished manuscripts from the Sibley Library of the University of Rochester, N.Y., were sifted and compared with historical copies.
