On this new release, the double bass soloist of the Vienna Philharmonic, Ödön Rácz, born in Budapest in 1981, brilliantly performs the operatic fantasias Lucia di Lammermoor and Beatrice di Tenda by Giovanni Bottesini after the eponymous operas by Gaetano Donizetti and Vincenzo Bellini respectively and the Fantasia on a Theme from the Opera Moses by Rossini by Niccolò Paganini. Besides Paganini's fantasia, another extremely virtuoso work that was originally written for violin is the Valse triste in C minor by Ferenc Vecsey. Originating later in the 20th century, there are the Sonata Enigmatica for Double Bass Solo by Gottfried von Einem and the commissioned work Bass Trip, which the Latvian P?teris Vasks composed for the ARD Music Competition in 2003. It shows bravura from the best side, perfected by the excellent playing of the pianist János Balázs Jr.
Born in Budapest in 1981, Ödön Rácz learnt the double bass in studies with Gergely Járdanyi, a pupil of Ludwig Streicher, and Alois Posch. He began his duties as a member of the double bass group of the orchestra of Vienna State Opera on 1 September 2004. Since 2009, he has been the double bass soloist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the orchestra of Vienna State Opera. Moreover, Ödön Rácz also performed as a soloist with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of Bavarian Radio, the George En?scu Orchestra and the Hungarian Virtuoso Orchestra.
After his first record with works by Giovanni Bottesini, Johann Matthias Sperger and Hans Fryba was released by Lamati in 1997, he recorded the Double Concerto by Bottesini for Hungaroton in 2003.
Ödön Rácz regularly holds master classes in Italy, Taiwan, China and at Salzburg Festival. He is also a founder member of the ensemble 'The Philharmonics'.
