Chamber music by Johannes Brahms and Edvard Grieg - 'Musical musclemen among themselves'. The subtitle of this recording by the internationally celebrated, award-winning duo of Adam Javorkai and Clara Biermasz conveys an apposite picture of the powerful and intense sounds worlds of these two Romantics, who are only so different at first glance. Apart from using songlike folk melodies from his Norwegian homeland, Edvard Grieg's music is based on classical structure and counterpoint. These are also the ideals of Brahms, whose expressiveness is always also highly emotional and heartfelt despite all his formal austerity. With their thrilling interpretations of the Cello Sonata in E minor op. 38 by Brahms and the A minor Sonata op. 36 by Grieg, Adam Javorkai and Clara Biermasz offer us exciting and entertaining listening.
Adam Javorkai and Clara Biermasz met in Budapest in 2005. They attended chamber music classes at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna.
In July 2008, Javorkai and Biermasz won first prizes at the international music competition 'Premio Città di Padova'. In December 2008, they were prize-winners at the 18th International Music Competition in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Amongst other places, they have performed in the Netherlands, Austria, Great Britain, Italy and Hungary.
The duo Adam Javorkai and Clara Biermasz has a wide repertoire and is always in search of undiscovered compositions or composers that deserve to be performed. In the past, they have had great success with their performances of the cello sonatas by Zoltan Kodaly and Ernö (Ernst von) Dohnanyi and with rarely performed pieces like the two cello sonatas by Camille Saint-Saëns.
