The Demmler Quartet with Dietrich Hempel and Thomas Probst, violins, Maria Schöne, viola, and Jörg Ulrich Krah, cello, present string quartets from 450 years of musical history in Mecklenburg. Beginning with Thomas Mencken in the 16th century, a broad arch is stretched over Antonio Rosetti, Friedrich von Flotow and Richard Wagner into the 21st century and the Fantasia for String Quartet by the ensemble member Jörg Ulrich Krah. The discovery of hitherto rather unknown musical treasures by these composers associated with Schwerin was just as much motivation for this CD as the challenge to present music from four completely different periods to a broader audience, taking the respective performance practice into account.
The four musical actors of the Demmler Quartet first came together for performance at the beginning of 2012. In its performances, which have always received acclaim on the part of the audience and the press, besides the great chamber music works for string quartet the young ensemble regularly presents works in expanded instrumentation, such as Schoenberg's 2nd String Quartet with soprano in Ratzeburg Cathedral or Schubert's String Quintet in Schwerin Castle. In addition, the ensemble named after the famous Schwerin architect Georg A. Demmler (1804-1886) devotes itself to more rarely played composers, whose oeuvre has still to be discovered.
The NDR devoted an exclusive programme to this special project Treasures from Mecklenburg by the Demmler Quartet on 'Welt der Musik'.
