Thomas Albertus Irnberger, Barbara Moser - Den Männern ebenbürtig (2013)

As is still the case in many other areas of life, too, in the history of music women composers have always been overshadowed by their male colleagues. There are many reasons for this. With this recording, the Salzburg-born violinist Thomas Albertus Irnberger and the much appreciated pianist Barbara Moser show us clearly that the works of many women composers have largely remained unheeded or even been disdainfully assessed, unjustifiably. By proxy, they here do late justice to Louise Farrenc, born in Paris in 1804 and taught composition and music theory by Anton Reicha as of the age of 15, Ethel Smyth, the English composer, conductor, writer and campaigner for the British suffrage movement, born in London in 1858, Pauline Viardot-Garcia (1821-1910), whose mentor was no less a figure than Franz Liszt and Lili Boulanger (1893-1918), whose works, despite her severe illness and hence short life, strongly influenced subsequent composers such as Arthur Honegger as well as artists from other genres such as the jazz musician Herbie Hancock.
