Starting out as an upscale supper club on Commercial Boulevard in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1973, Pete & Lenny’s became the premier disco club of the mid to late 1970’s which rivaled all major establishments from coast to coast. A massive tri-level complex that can only be described as elegantly decadent, Pete & Lenny’s became THE place to see and be seen. The club attracted some pretty heavyweight headliners who performed there including The Village People, Vicky Sue Robinson, Tavares, Donna Summer, Odyssey, Al Green and many more. Starting in 1977, two nationally broadcast television shows – Disco 77 and Disco Magic were filmed there, giving the club massive exposure and ensured that the place was always packed. Aside from the incredible décor and the sheer massiveness of the place, there was one attraction that set Pete & Lenny’s apart from all the other disco clubs in the area; and that was the top notch house band named Ecstacy that could perform spot on covers of the big dance-floor hits of the day so convincingly that it would literally drive the crowd wild. Performing on the second story dance floor at an appointed time each night, Ecstacy would come out with their matching flashy suits and put on a high level show with an intensity that was unheard of for a so called “cover” band. The band appeared on the aforementioned nationally syndicated television shows that were taped there, and were even featured on an episode of Miami Vice. In addition to the group’s almost identical covers of the disco hits of the day, Ecstacy also performed top-notch, original material which was met with the same response as the covers they performed. The original band members included Michael Holland (vocals); Jay Martin (guitar); Jessie Acevedo (guitar); Alex Villalobos (bass); Al Muzaurieta (drums); Michael Romano (keyboards); Lee Thornburg (trumpet) and Fermin Goytisolo (congas). Later versions of the group also included Jimmy Carrion (vocals); Burt Acevedo (drums) and Arana Hernandez (percussion). Band guitarist Jay Martin’s dad Joe Martin owned Apex-Martin, a record distributorship in New Jersey, Campus Distribution in Miami, and was also at one time a shareholder in Fantasy Records, the legendary jazz label headquartered in Berkeley, California. Joe provided funding for the band’s original recordings at premier studios, including the Music Factory with Bob Archibald producing, which insured a high level of quality in the finished product. At the time that the recordings took place between 1975 and the mid-1980’s, the band had no idea how important these recordings would become today because they truly depict an era that is gone but not forgotten. Presented here for the first time is a comprehensive retrospective of one of the finest house bands of the disco era.
