"Humor is the button that prevents us from bursting." This sentence by Joachim Ringelnatz could also have come from the Nuremberg guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Joschi Joachimsthaler. He feels mischievous in every pore of his neck when he explains that little everyday things often annoy him and that he has to process them in his own compositions. How does that sound then? To listen to on his humorous instrumental debut with the title "and other complicated words".
And complicated - especially for his friends in Spain, where he lived for a year - is not only his surname, but also putting it into words musically. Its spectrum ranges from the complex e-guitar rock rhythms of a tank ballet to absurdly wandering fusion funk to springy gypsy jazz played with classical guitar, somewhere between Django Reinhardt and Paco De Lucia. But why laboriously operating drawers when it is much nicer to simply listen to the music away from what has already been heard. One thing is clear: Joachimsthaler's own compositions surprise. Neither rhythmically nor harmonically anything can be foreseen or listened to beforehand, and some will desperately look for the right, clock-setting beat for one or the other song. In good old Prince fashion, Joachimsthaler played all the instruments in his songs himself, the compositions and recordings were made during the pandemic lockdown in Alicante, Spain. “I'm actually a band guy and I hate playing alone. The advantage: You don't have to argue so much, ”explains the 31-year-old. He used the corona siesta that lasted several months in the apartment of the deceased "grandmother-in-law" to put everything on tape that makes him musically. Always with a wink, not taking yourself too seriously. "If you kid yourself, you save others the work". This Heinz-Erhardt wisdom also fits.
But mostly profound things are hidden behind the facade of cheerfulness. For the young Joschi, the hostility of the small-minded Middle Franconian village community - the mother comes from a Sinti dynasty - was less dramatic. Even then he was joking away a lot and was a class clown in the best sense of the word. Strokes of fate such as the separation of the parents and a series of deaths in quick succession in the family, on the other hand, were big topics, says the musician. But he also drew positive things from this. “I learned to deal with death early on and had to become self-employed quickly. My sense of humor certainly helped me. "
And of course the music. There was a lot of music played together in the family. Joschi started playing the drums, much to the delight of the neighbors in the apartment building at home, then the guitar followed. From 2007 to 2009 he attended the vocational school for music in Dinkelsbühl, after graduating, he turned his love for music into a profession. Since then he has been working as a studio musician for Native Instruments, among others, and has been on stage as a welcome sideman in numerous bands such as Karin Rabhansl, Eric Martin (Mr. Big), Freedom Call or Carlos Reisch. This also explains the versatility that Joachimsthaler expresses on his debut album. An open mind, apart from narrow-minded genre thinking!
