Trying to define the term “Red Dirt Music” can be as confusing and puzzling as trying to write the definition of Americana Music. One man’s progressive sounds might very well be someone else’s traditional slant. The same could be said for Jason Boland & The Stragglers. Listening to their music, I personally am taken back in time to the great Country sounds coming off of stations like WSM-AM in the early 1980s. The first two cuts – the title and “Electric Bill” really cook – thanks to Boland’s hard driving vocal and the instrumental work of Roger Ray’s steel work and the crisp fiddle work of Nick Worley.
And, it just gets better! On “Lucky I Guess,” there’s a very weathered sound, which seems to fit Boland rather well. He shifts into somewhat of a mysterious and murky sound on the story song “They Took It Away,” then kicks it into Dance Hall mode on the well-written “Nine Times Out Of Ten.”
I don’t know how you define what “Red Dirt Music” is, but on this, their seventh disc, Boland sounds like he is in a zone all his own. Whether it be on “Blue Diamond,” the Waylon-ish “Spend All Your Time,” and the closing “See You When I See You.” this CD is pretty dang good – from start to finish. Regardless of how you want to classify it!
