Pieter Schuermans is a highly versatile composer and musician. He initially qualified with a Masters in Music from the Lemmens campus of the LUCA School of Arts in composition, double bass, flute and orchestral conducting. He continued his studies at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent and abroad before gaining his doctorate at the KU in Louvain with his thesis Chaotic Pulse, Pulsating Chaos and an accompanying artistic portfolio.

He has performed with almost all of the leading ensembles and orchestras in Flanders. He was the permanent double bass player with the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense for many years, with whom he made numerous concert tours abroad as well as CD recordings. Pieter Schuermans also founded the eaRis company, an ensemble dedicated to interdisciplinarity. He composed and directed the performance Looking Through Eardrums that blended dance, juggling and music, and led the company on tour throughout Europe as far as Sweden, with performances in Paris, Vienna, Brescia, Leipzig, and Stockholm.

He has devoted himself to youth orchestra work in Flanders as conductor and as a driving force on the boards of Jeugd en Muziek Vlaanderen and Amaj. His career as a conductor took him to China, where he conducted several concerts in the renowned Oriental Arts Centre in Shanghai; he also rapidly made a name for himself thanks to his performances of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. He is in demand as a guest conductor and regularly works with the Ataneres Ensemble, with whom he has made several recordings, some of which feature his own music. Pieter Schuermans is chairman of the Composers’ Archipelago Flanders (ComAV) and is committed to promoting and supporting Flemish composers at in Belgium and abroad. The Belgian Music Days and the CD series Fingerprints are just a few of the projects in which he and ComAV are involved.

He is affiliated to the Lemmens campus of the LUCA School of Arts as both teacher and coordinator of composition; his artistic focus and research is currently directed towards composition and conducting. He has won several awards and recognitions for his music and has collaborated with, among others, the Quatuor Danel, the Brussels Philharmonic, the Kugoni Trio, the Ataneres Ensemble, the Goeyvaerts String Trio, the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, the Transit Festival and Radio Klara.
