"This is a wonderful collection of late Haydn symphonies made notable by 76,77 and 78. These were the three works allegedly 'earmarked' for a proposed London trip which fell through, eventually taking place nearly a decade later in 1791. I sincerely think you can detect an 'English' feel to some of these works and 76 would probably be quite at home in the London Suite of works 9 years later. That said, they are immensely enjoyable on any level and Fischer's interpretation is always crisp and lively. Haydn's optimism is what really shines through in the symphonic form for me and there are some exceptional movements here."- Anonymous

"The Nimbus Records series of Haydn symphonies played by the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra conducted by Adam Fischer continues with this volume of "Papa Jo" Haydn's "middle" symphonies from mid 1770s to early 1780s. Not as popular as the later "Paris" and "London" sets these symphonies are none the less brilliant examples of the "Father of the Symphony" at work. The symphonies were recorded in the Esterhazy palace of Eisenstadt where they would have been originally performed and where Joseph Haydn would have personally conducted them and played with the orchestra. This boxed set is an essential to the Haydn lover and the penultimate in the set of 8 volumes which will complete the entire collection of Haydn's 104 symphonies."-Laurence Gaymer

"Superb performances and well recorded. This orchestra treat these far from early Haydn symphonies seriously but with plenty of sparkle and anyone who thinks that a person who wrote 106 (yes, 106) symphonies must have run out of ideas will be pleasantly surprised. I found these performances superior to certain other performances I've heard on "period instruments".- JandJ Theaker
