With its old-time country rock 'n' roll, a slightly questionable title, and an awful rabbit cartoon front cover – an image that hints worryingly at the likes of Jive Bunny, except a sepia-tinted version based somewhere in the Deep South – anybody would think Woody Pines’ latest record was a novelty affair. Well here’s a surprise. It’s actually not.
‘Rabbits Motel’ is an excellent mix of great ragtime music and old school country blues. Each song harps back to a bygone era, a time of jug bands, speakeasies and journeys made in boxcars. Yet for every fun country romp, there’s a song of real heart and substance. Tracks such as ‘Like I Do’ and ‘Train That Carried My Girl From Town’ may skip along joyfully, but there’s also the likes of ‘Hobo And His Bride’ and ‘Railroad Vine’ with their mournful, slow and sombre tales. ‘Rabbits Motel’ also includes some brilliant and at times very funny lyrics. These are demonstrated throughout but the highlight is ‘Heartbreaker’, a hilarious yarn of the various things Woody Pines hopes to do having been jilted by a lover. Everybody take heed. This is clearly not a man to cause emotional pain too. In spite of its looks its what’s on the inside that counts, and in ‘Rabbits Motel’ Woody Pines has produced a highly inventive reminder of the music from another time.
