“In the beginning there was Le Cube…
the cornerstone trio, the base off all cubic experiments. French journalist Franck Bergerot said of the trio “there are few sax players as identifiable as Alban Darche, because he has a style – be it written on paper or when he's improvising – like no other similar... It is fresh, full of humor, a false-true impertinence which reminds me of th statuary of Max Ernst.”
In the last 15 years, Le Cube has not ceased to invite strong personalities to colour its conversation. Here, by inviting the American saxophonist Jon Irabagon and the Belgian keyboard player Jozef Dumoulin to join Le Cube, I have created a HyprCub which confirms strongly the heritage that feeds my music: American + European jazz which, if for a long time were distinct, evolve nowadays to create a rich contemporary expression of each contribution.
In HyprCub we rediscover equally the off beats of Steve Coleman, as well as the feminine sensuality of the sound of Paul Desmond.
HyprCub refuses to contain a particular style, it aims to move frontiers, to pursue the ideal of a universal music where everything is to be used and learnt.
A music with several dimensions?
Like a cubist painter, I whish to create a music that express immediately the sum of the acoustic memories deep inside each of us, reminiscent of the music that forms the sound track of our existence. An instant perception of the music of some imaginary film...
“My” music must be perceived by each as one wishes to ear it, but I like to offer several levels. The first angle (or dimension) gives recognizable tunes, evoking beats that speak to the body. At second listening one can discern subtleties less apparent: polyrhythms that I hope are tricky, original counter melodies...
Several dimensions therefore, yes! The first level in my different cubic orchestras, the second level in the feeling of music, body first and mind next.”
