The new album Intimate Landscapes for Piano contains eight piano works by our national composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) interpreted by Tuija Hakkila. The album features: Five Characteristic Impressions, Op. 103 (1923-1924), Cinq morceaux pour piano (Flower Series) op. 85 (1916-1917), Five Romantic Compositions, Op. 101 (1923-1924), Der Sturm (Storm) op. 109 (1925-1927), Cinq morceaux pour piano (Tree Series) op. 75 (1914), Fünf Skizzen (Five Sketches), Op. 114 (1929), Zwei Rondinos (Two Rondinos) Op. 68 (1912) and To My Beloved Aino JS 161 (1931).
Sibelius composed a large piano production, including more than a hundred opus-numbered and dozens of opus-numbered works, in addition to making numerous piano arrangements of his own orchestral production. Sibelius continued to create piano music until the very end of his active period of composition. The Last Piano Opus, Fünf Skizzen op. 114, was completed in 1929 - three years after the last large-scale orchestral work, Tapiola (Op. 112, 1926). Sibelius' latest piano composition is a piano duo for the Beloved Aino (JS 161), which he wrote as a 60-year-old gift to his wife in August 1931. On this record, Hakkila duets the song with Heini Kärkkäinen.
A comprehensive presentation of the work in the booklet has been compiled by Sibelius researcher Anna Pulkkis, one of the editors of the composer's critical edition. On the cover of the album is a picture taken by Taneli Eskola of the view of Ainola's window.
Tuija Hakkila's interest covers numerous different styles of music, and her repertoire ranges from baroque to the latest music. In addition to the classical piano repertoire, Hakkila has achieved a special reputation as a master of the piano. Heini Kärkkäinen is a versatile pianist, a favorite soloist guest of orchestras and a respected chamber musician who has also unprejudicedly premiered new music.
