In a career cut short by an early death, singer Slim Smith still managed to carve out a place in Jamaican musical history as one of best rocksteady and early reggae vocalists. On par with equally original and soulful singers like Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe, Smith built up his reputation as a member of both the Techniques and the Uniques, two of the era's top harmony groups. From 1969 until his 1973 demise, though, Smith focused on solo work, often under the watch of producer Bunny Lee. And while he cut many classic solo and group discs early on ("My Conversation," "I'll Never Let Go"), it's these later solo tracks that find Smith at his most emotionally bare. This lean collection features ten of them, including Smith's own "Time Has Come" and "This Feeling." There are also fine covers of Curtis Mayfield's "My Woman's Love" and Eddie Floyd's "Stand Up and Fight." Helped out by the Aggrovators band, some of his fellow Uniques, and even King Tubby (Lee had the dub master remix much of Smith's later solo material after the singer's death), Smith delivers some of the most supreme examples of reggae soul here. And for fans wishing to check out even more of these solo cuts, be sure to pick up Trojan's 18-track disc Rain From the Skies, which only includes four of the sides found on this collection.
