La Luz, Melenas and other Hinds can tremble because here comes a new heavyweight in terms of women's surfing. This is L.A. Exes who, as the name suggests, comes to us from Los Angeles and offers us good quality, good-natured surf-pop with the release of their debut album called Get Some.
The queer quartet (and it is important to specify it) composed of Jenny Owen Youngs, Sam Barbera (also from the group Beginners), Rachel White and Steph Barker offers us a good digest of surf and garage-pop lo-fi on purpose spirited and lively. And from the start, they set the bar high with cheerful songs such as “Skinny Dipping” which opens the ball but also “West Keys” and “Cocaine Girl” with atmospheres somewhat reminiscent of the Beach Boys but with more funky rhythms than 'as usual.
There's no denying it, L.A. Exes is having fun the best they can. On Get Some, Californians unveil their natural know-how as a scent of recklessness and retro emerges on voluntarily 60's riffs of "Cocaine Girl" and "Baby Let’s Pretend". We imagine them sunbathing in a hot tub on a scorching day as they send life's adversities waltzing with "Temporary Goodbye" and "Not Again" before ending with a more haunting "Linger". The female surf competition is getting tougher now.
