We got to know Jef Mercelis, the singer-songwriter from Turnhout when he reached the final of Humo's Rock Rally in 1992 together with dEUS, Nemo and The Sideburns, the predecessor of Novastar.
It was not until four years later that he and his band released the debut album “The Hopes & Dreams of a Drunk Punk”. The album and also live performances on Marktrock, among others, reach a crowd of loyal fans, but not the general public. He then started writing music for numerous award-winning (inter)national film, dance and theater projects.
His second album rock album “Western Union” followed in 2005 and he also shared the bill with John Parish and Mark Eitzel, among others. Jef Mercelis produced albums by Quiet Stars and the Berlin-based Leila Albayaty, among others, and played with Rudy Trouvé's I H8 Camera, Saint Jane and Necessary Evil, a trio with Teuk Henri and Frank Pay. The band accompanied poet Jan Ducheyne, among others. He is also a member of the Brussels collective Individual Friends, which has just released its debut album.
After 16 years of maturing, the new album “White Flemish Trash” is now released, an unruly, intense, honest and stunning album. Mercelis is back as a trio with drummer PaTricky Clauwaert (Francoiz Breut, Trio Clauwaert Henri Jacquemyn) and guitarist Teuk Henri (SHARKO, Rawfrücht, I H8 Camera). Matt Watts provides backing vocals on the album.
