THE PERFECT CONSPIRACY: Ted Hoagland inspired SOhO Sunday with his CD release party for the new The Hoagland Conspiracy album. The performance showcased his talents as both an acoustic troubadour and as a rocking band leader. He opened the show with an entertaining solo set that revealed a solid vocal resemblance to a young Bob Dylan. Following his solo set, Hoagland came out with his band and they jammed on songs from the new album. The band rocked through a mix of blues, funk, and country tunes as Hoagland's gifted storytelling and strong stage presence continued to shine.
--Will Engel, The Santa Barbara Independent, November 10, 2005

Formed in in 2003, The Hoagland Conspiracy bring an authentic, roots-oriented sound and an undeniable songwriting voice to the southern California music scene. Fueled by Ted Hoaglands lyrics and melodies, the band spans a range of styles from to 70s funky rock to country to old-time inspired blues. Each musical flavor supports the story and character of a given song. Unlike many singer-songwriter based bands, this unit is not afraid to dig in and jam when the mood strikes, which makes them an immensely satisfying live act.

Originally from southern Indiana, Ted Hoagland moved to Santa Barbara in the late 90s and began writing and performing solo. After releasing a well-received CD, "Left Field" (also available on CDBaby), he began to envision a band. My songs were outgrowing my guitar, and I started looking for great players who like lots of different kinds of music, said Hoagland, whose influences range from Santana to Randy Newman. Eventually I found players who felt the songs and brought them to life, no matter what the style.

In addition to Hoagland, the band consists of drummer Snake Farmer and bassist Garth Froula. Garth and Snake had played together for several years and were easily the best rhythm section in town when I met them, Hoagland recalls. They are frequently joined by guest musicians both live and in studio.

The Hoagland Conspiracy released its self-titled debut CD in November, 2005. The songs portray a string of intriguing characters animated by Hoaglands mercurial baritone voice. The arrangements and the production range from simple to lush, giving the listener multiple vantage points from which to experience the band. Hoaglands knack for fusing resonant lyrics with memorable melodies is readily apparent throughout the 11 tracks.
