Das legendäre Golden Gate Quartet, kurz GGQ, ist die älteste, aktive Spiritual Gesangs-Gruppe der Welt. In Norfolk, Virginia, wurde das Quartett 1934 als Golden Gate Jubilee Singers von den vier Studenten Willie Johnson (Bariton), William Langford (Tenor), Henry Owens (Zweiter Tenor) and Orlandus Wilson (Bass) gegründet.
Inspiriert von den Mills Brothers orientierte sich das Quartett schon früh an populären Musikstilen. Viele Auftritte in Kirchen und vor allem eine reguläre Radio Show machten die Gruppe regional schnell bekannt. Erste Plattenaufnahmen entstanden 1937, als die Gruppe in nur zwei Stunden vierzehn Songs einspielte! Die kamen auch dem Jazz- und Konzert- Produzenten John Hammond zu Ohren, der 1938 in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall das erste »From Spirituals to Swing« Konzert organisierte, in dem er neben dem GGQ Blues-Musiker wie Big Bill Broonzy, frühen Jazz von Sidney Bechet und Boogie Woogie mit Albert Ammons und James P. Johnson als Vorläufer für die Jazz-Stars der damaligen Zeit, allen voran Count Basie, Lester Young und Benny Goodman, programmierte.
Das GGQ wurde vom New Yorker Publikum gefeiert und bekam so einen festen Platz im Programm des Café Society, dem angesagtesten Musik-Club des Big Apple. Zur Amtseinführung 1941 von Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt wird das GGQ in die Constitutional Hall als erste schwarze Gruppe eingeladen, weitere Einladungen ins Weiße Haus folgen. Durch Plattenaufnahmen für Columbia, Auftritte in Hollywood-Filmen und erste Auslands-Tourneen steigt die Popularität bis Ende des 2. Weltkrieges. Der junge Elvis ist Fan der Gruppe und wird ihr auch später als Star noch treu bleiben, wenn er bei ihren Konzerten im Publikum erscheint. Ab Mitte der 50er Jahre erobert das GGQ die Konzertbühnen der ganzen Welt und erfreut mit immer wieder neuen Besetzungen sein Publikum auch noch im 21. Jahrhundert.

Das legendäre Golden Gate Quartet, kurz GGQ, ist die älteste, aktive Spiritual Gesangs-Gruppe der Welt. In Norfolk, Virginia, wurde das Quartett 1934 als Golden Gate Jubilee Singers von den vier Studenten Willie Johnson (Bariton), William Langford (Tenor), Henry Owens (Zweiter Tenor) and Orlandus Wilson (Bass) gegründet.
Inspiriert von den Mills Brothers orientierte sich das Quartett schon früh an populären Musikstilen. Viele Auftritte in Kirchen und vor allem eine reguläre Radio Show machten die Gruppe regional schnell bekannt. Erste Plattenaufnahmen entstanden 1937, als die Gruppe in nur zwei Stunden vierzehn Songs einspielte! Die kamen auch dem Jazz- und Konzert- Produzenten John Hammond zu Ohren, der 1938 in der New Yorker Carnegie Hall das erste »From Spirituals to Swing« Konzert organisierte, in dem er neben dem GGQ Blues-Musiker wie Big Bill Broonzy, frühen Jazz von Sidney Bechet und Boogie Woogie mit Albert Ammons und James P. Johnson als Vorläufer für die Jazz-Stars der damaligen Zeit, allen voran Count Basie, Lester Young und Benny Goodman, programmierte.
Das GGQ wurde vom New Yorker Publikum gefeiert und bekam so einen festen Platz im Programm des Café Society, dem angesagtesten Musik-Club des Big Apple. Zur Amtseinführung 1941 von Präsident Franklin D. Roosevelt wird das GGQ in die Constitutional Hall als erste schwarze Gruppe eingeladen, weitere Einladungen ins Weiße Haus folgen. Durch Plattenaufnahmen für Columbia, Auftritte in Hollywood-Filmen und erste Auslands-Tourneen steigt die Popularität bis Ende des 2. Weltkrieges. Der junge Elvis ist Fan der Gruppe und wird ihr auch später als Star noch treu bleiben, wenn er bei ihren Konzerten im Publikum erscheint. Ab Mitte der 50er Jahre erobert das GGQ die Konzertbühnen der ganzen Welt und erfreut mit immer wieder neuen Besetzungen sein Publikum auch noch im 21. Jahrhundert.
