Hundreds of prints with guitar music were published in France and Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. As such, it is all the more surprising that only nine books remain from Spain, the instrument’s country of origin. Half the surviving solo pieces for guitar come from Santiago de Murcia (1673-1737). Murcia’s fourth book, Cifras selectas de guitarra, dated 1722, only reappeared a few years ago in Santiago de Chile. It contains a multitude of Spanish variations.
