Viola – Nobuko Imai
Nobuko Imai makes this playing very much about Bach and very little about herself. The vibrato is almost non-existent, but surprisingly not in a way that you immediately notice. The playing is subtle instead of lush (which she shows she can be in many other recordings). Some may find the subtlety as a fault, but for me it works.
Also note that many violists approach the Suites as cello suites, rather than independent pieces of music. Bach himself was an avid transcriber, and so it excites me that Imai makes this recording sound uniquely violistic. Rivka Golani's recording sounds heavy handed to me, and while it may work on cello, I think these suites essentially change when transcribed up to a brighter octave.
