Horace Andy's voice has a sound that you will never forget, regardless of whether you heard it for the first time on one of the numerous Jamaican reggae singles that he excluded during the 1970s, or - like most of them - on one of Massive's albums Attack, on which he was a vocalist. His falsetto breathed life into titles such as “Cuss Cuss”, “Money Money”, “Skylarking” or “(You are My) Angel” with its characteristic slow-motion vibrato that continues to this day. His singing style influenced countless roots singers, and the combination of his timbre with the spartan hip-hop beats of Massive Attack would in turn attract admirers and imitators around the world twenty years later.
Last but not least, Horace Andy (who was born in 1951 under the name Horace Hinds in Jamaica) is a personality you will never forget: a warm, friendly man who combines consciousness with open-mindedness and who almost always seems to smile. Certainly he is one of the most influential, well-traveled and well-known artists of his generation, and his career has proven to be extremely long-lasting, with all the ups and downs.
Echo Beach ties in with this tradition - and of course the much older versioning - with “versioning” when friends of the EB Horace family dress Andy's classics in their current sound outfit. But this time - it would have been like the nineties - old Studio One tapes were not searched for historical vocal recordings, no, Horace Andy asked for a session in person in the vocal booth to sing his classic songs anew on timeless and contemporary riddims.
