Geraldine “Jerry” Jones arrived in Kingston in May of 1970 to perform at the Miss Jamaica International Model Pageant held at the Hotel Kingston. She would also appear at the House of Chen, VIP Club, Hotel Flamingo, Runaway Bay Hotel and the Courtleigh Manor Hotel backed by top Jamaican show bands like Tomorrow's Children, the Mighty Vikings, and the Boris Gardiner Happening. Her visit was arranged in part by Miami- based record producer Alty East, for whom she had recorded three singles released on the Pal Label.
A native of Alabama, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where after high school she joined the famous gospel group The Elite Jewel. After an unsuccessful run with her own group, she moved to Miami and was soon appearing at some of the top soul clubs like the Continental and the Knight Beat that featured top US acts like the Impressions, Solomon Burke, Joe Tex and Johnny Nash. Also appearing were artists like Della Humphrey and Lloyd Williams. Jones also appeared at Nassau’s Cat and Fiddle run by the Munnings family.
Alty East had known Mr. Dodd since the late '50s when he leased Club Maracas from owner Pierre Chong. He and Clement Dodd later released a few Studio One sides on the US based BRA label, although the label was really a vehicle for Byron Lee and Ronnie Nasralla productions, hence the BRA. Byron Lee made frequent appearances at Club Maracas throughout its existence.
The Jerry Jones album is filled with covers that most likely were the songs she performed live, including selections originally by the Beatles, the Fascinations, Donny Hathaway, and Tommy Edwards. Her reading of “Compared to What” is especially strong. Throughout the album the prominent guitar styling of Ernest Ranglin is featured.
Jerry Jones at the Hotel Kingston was the pinnacle of Clement Dodd’s soul and reggae explorations. No other Jamaican label was ever able to achieve the originality and versatility found in the arrangements or mine the soul vein quite so successfully. The album stands as one of Studio One’s greatest accomplishments and a reminder of how Dodd’s interests could translate into some of Jamaica’s best music.
