WELCOME TO THE MUSIC OF THE ROCK
Music is in the DNA of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Maybe it’s the hard, cold Atlantic winters, when many, snowed inside, learned to play the bodhran, fiddle or accordion. Maybe it’s the way music has evolved as a way to take care of one another, coming together at kitchen parties to share stories and songs – and remind each other in dark times that there’s a community singing harmony with us all – just as they did when they entertained stranded passengers after 9/11.Whatever it is, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are amazing musicians. We grew up listening to Damhnait Doyle and Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle and Bob Hallett. Without them, Come From Away would never have happened. When we travelled to Gander on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we saw The Navigators play the “world’s largest walk-in refrigerator” (the Gander community centre hockey rink) and we made mix tapes for our team of The Dardanelles, The Once, The Punters, and The Irish Descendants. And you never saw a finer dance floor than when Shanneyganock played our opening night party on Broadway! Since then, it’s been a joy to discover even more incredible East Coast talent – artists like Abigale, Jason Benoit, Rachel Cousins, Sherman Downey, Mike Herriott & Ofra Harnoy, Rosemary Lawton, and the Silver Wolf Band – all unique, but all somehow with a shared musical heritage. Come From Away isn’t a traditional musical, in which songs can be separated from the book and easily played in cabaret shows – dialogue is constantly interwoven through each number, and many of them are quite short. So these bands had the added challenge of not just finding their own vision for how to perform a song – they also had to make the actual song! To do that we shared our original lyrics and arrangements, as in this re-imagined version of “Welcome to the Rock.” Sometimes we created new lyrics together, like in “Lead Us Out of the Darkness” (which also includes a prayer in Labradorian Inuttitut). And sometimes we used other songs, as in “Prayer of St. Francis,” pairing it with a beautiful Mi’kmaq anthem honouring Jason's culture and creating a new mash-up of prayers as we do in the show. In some cases the songs became something entirely new, like “I Am Here” or the orchestral “Themes from Come From Away.”Our goal with Come From Away was always to give back to our friends in Newfoundland and Labrador, and we were thrilled to be able to hire these artists we admired during a time when touring was impossible. So if you like what you hear, please check out each artist’s website and go see them live — hopefully in Newfoundland and Labrador! But really, this project was a gift for us: to have our music interpreted by these amazing bands that we’re such fans of! Huge thanks to our co-producers, Ian Eisendrath, Bob Hallett, and Sean Patrick Flahaven, our mixer, Ian Kagey, and mastering engineer, Oscar Zambrano (who both also worked on the cast album); to everyone at Concord for supporting this idea; and to the amazing musical community who generously came together once again to make this happen. — David Hein & Irene Sankoff
