Manuel de Falla: Suite Populaire Espagnole: These lovely songs were originally written for voice and piano and have since been transcribed for many other instruments. In the process of transcribing, one of the songs was removed and due to it being much more suited for a vocalist I understand why one would exclude it. In regards to the other six songs, I always think that each song has its own personality and style and each one adds a different element to a journey through the country of Spain. From the grand entrances of the Spanish palaces to the beautiful countryside and even the Matadors with their bright red capes I believe you can hear every element and even picture it in your mind through these songs.

Astor Piazzolla: Le Grand Tango: Piazzolla is quite a well known Latin American composer of the 20th century and has quickly become one of my favorite composers ever since my discovery of his Grand Tango. Even though he was originally from Argentina he was one of the first Latin American composers to take a step away from traditional tango music and integrate elements of jazz and classical music into his pieces and I especially hear this in the third section of this piece. This whole piece is so energetic and inviting to the listener and in each section you get to hear a different style of tango.

Samuel Barber: Cello Sonata, Op.6: This sonata can be very confusing to listen to at first and I certainly experienced this when I was first learning it, but after playing and listening to it, I was able to hear the beauty and uniqueness of Barber’s composition. This piece is full of non-tonal passages and tricky rhythms but if you sit back and listen to the beautiful and intriguing qualities of the movements it really becomes one spectacular piece.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Pezzo Capriccioso: This piece has many different characters and moods throughout. In some parts it can be delightful and joyful, but in other sections it’s more romantic and filled with Tchaikovsky’s Russian flair. His flair is exhibited especially in the beginning when you hear the powerful opening melody that then leads to this cross between the joyful lighter character and a stronger more serious character. Then we, of course, get to the difficult bit. This lovely section of only 32nd notes is quite challenging and it always makes me laugh when I think about my part compared to the piano part in this section.
