Spirits Having Fun is one of those formations which evolve in the shadows but which would have deserved more recognition. The Chicago group has proven itself since 2019 with their instinctive and catchy debut album but continues to dig deep with the arrival of their successor named Two.
The two thinking heads that are Katie McShane (vocals, guitar) and Ansrew Clinkman (vocals, guitar) continue to show us all the colors. Spirits Having Fun distils their know-how halfway between krautrock, math-rock and twee-pop with rhythms inspired by free-jazz and it makes an impression when listening to the inventive and playful pieces that are "Silhouette" in as an introduction but also "Hold The Phone" and "Broken Cloud".
Two will know how to instill a permanent tension throughout. The vocal duo McShane / Clinkman will know how to hypnotize us with among others “See A Sky”, “Entropy Transfer Partners” while passing by “Am There” which will have something to recall as well James Yorkston as Soft Machine of the beginnings. The Chicago group offers us a second playful and inventive album as evidenced by “Picture Of A Person” and “Sweet Oak” as a deafening finale and which will have the merit of making the talent of Spirits Having Fun speak.
