I first heard Wolfl's piano sonatas on Sirius while driving -- the person I was with thought it was Beethoven and, unquestionably, the musical language was Beethoven's, but there was a puckish or mischievous element to the music that is lacking in Beethoven. It turned out to be Wolfl, a name that neither I nor my friend had ever heard. I immediately purchased Wolfl's sonatas and some of his piano concertos and found them very rewarding. The sonatas are Beethoven with a whiff of fresh air -- as difficult if not moreso to play; less serious and probably less profound. The concertos are much more Mozartean (Wolfl studied with Michael Haydn and Leopold Mozart) and thus are not as forward looking as the sonatas, but nonetheless rewarding.
